Arifiani, Dewi Mustika. 2016. An Analysis of Grammatical and Lexical Cohesion in Emma Watson’s Speech Text on Gender Equality. Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta


The researcher analyzes how cohesion marker used in the speech text and the cohesiveness degree of Emma Watson’s Speech Text. The writer focus on how the grammatical and lexical cohesion devices used in the speech text to reveal the gender equality and what are the grammatical and lexical cohesion used dominantly in the speech text to reveal the gender equality. For this research the writer uses the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the researcher herself, which Emma Watson’s Speech Text on Gender Equality is the unit of her analysis. The researcher found that the percentage in every grammatical cohesion devices are; reference is 68.21% (I, you, your, this, it, the), substitution is 1.16% (nominal substitution), and conjunction is 9.68% (but). While for the lexical cohesion, the percentage in every lexical cohesion devices are; repetition is 7.75% (men, women), synonym is 3.10% (boys, men, male), near-synonym is 1.93%, superordinate is 2.32%, general word is 0.77%, and collocation is 4.65%. By the data given, it can be conclude that the grammatical cohesion dominantly is reference, in particular is personal and demonstrative reference. Meanwhile, for the lexical cohesion is repetition dominantly.

This research paper aims to describe the linguistics form and the meaning of register used in soccer page of social media Facebook. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is the register used in soccer page of social media Facebook. The researcher finds that in linguistic form there are 13 data of noun, 1 datum of verb, 1 datum of adjective, 15 data of compound word, 1 datum of abbreviation, and 6 data of noun phrase and there are two types of meaning: 9 data of lexical meaning and 28 data of contextual meaning. By the data given, it can be conclude that the more frequently appear of linguistic form are in compound word (40.5%) and meaning is in contextual meaning (75.6%).

Al-Khasawneh, Fadi Maher and friends. 2014. The Effect of Metacognitive Strategies Instruction on Vocabulary Learning among Jordanian University Students. International Journal of English and Education, Vol. 3, No. 3, 2014, pg. 102-113


Based on the inconsistent and inconclusive of results of the research on strategy instruction before, the researchers of this article aims at identifying the effects of metacognitive strategy instruction on vocabulary learning of Jordanian University of Science and Technology students through ten weeks instruction program. Sixty students randomly chosen as participant in vocabulary test. The students are dividing into two groups, there are 30 students in control group and the other 30 are in experimental group. The experimental group received explicit instruction on using metacognitive strategies while the control group did not receive any instruction. The result of this study is the experimental group surpassed the control group in post-instruction vocabulary test after they got instruction on using metacognitive strategies, so by the result it conclude that the method is proved to be effective.

Not only attract students’ in English, but the researcher also use Proverbs to keep the students’ interest in learning it. By compare between English and local proverbs, the writer may trigger students’ curiosity to learn further. Proverbs also can be used in teaching character building towards students.

Tasneen, Waseema. Literary Texts in the Language Classroom: a Study of Teachers’ and Students’ views at International Schools in Bangkok . Asian EFL Journal, Vol. 12, No. 4, PDF pg. 1-17


This study’s aim is to find out teachers’ and students’ view about using literary texts in the language classes at some International Schools in Bangkok. Not only that, the researcher also want to know how much compatible  are the classroom activities with their views and what kind of materials do the teachers prefer to use in their English language classes. The researcher uses questionnaires (for both teachers and students), interviews (for the two parties) and some observations in the classroom. Both the teachers (37%) and students (68%) believed that literature was an asset to be used as the language teaching resource. However, both the teachers and the students faced some problems with literature in the language classrooms; 88% of the teachers thought that, for the students the linguistic level of the text and sometimes the cultural unfamiliarity hindered their comprehension of the texts. They liked both literatures with small and big ‘L’ to be used in their language classrooms. In fact some of them added that in a number of cases literature with small ‘l’ was more functional, as it gave the students quicker glimpses of various styles and structures.

Teachers need to change their method to maintain students’ interest in learning English, and to makes the students understand and can achieve their learning goals.

Students are at a learning stage, more eager to experiment with new things, and the mobile media tools are used widely among them. this study analyzes the advantages of the micro-video and micro-audio, and then focuses on the strategies in making or selecting micro-video and micro-audio. Through the data analysis, the author tries to get information about the actual situation of college students’ mobile learning. By this method, not only provoked the students’ interests in English listening and speaking, but also stimulated the enthusiasm of students.

The writer of this paper reported that Whatsapp application as a strategy to enchance students’ language skills, motivation and rapport to adolescent learners. Through this mobile learning, the study shares three techniques of writing activities to help adolescent learners develop their text types writing ability using WhatsApp. The techniques are brainstorming – group drafting – teacher’s feedback, starter – quick writing – peer feedback, and information gathering – elaboration exercises – checklist. The cheap and flexible WhatsApp brings potentials to help the English writing learning, the three techniques presented optimize features in Whatsapp application.

Yildiz, Mutafa. 2016. Contrasive Analysis of Turkish and English in Turkish EFL Learners’ Spoken Discourse. International Journal of English Study. July. Vol 16/1. Pg: 57-74.


This study focus in finding whether L1 Turkish caused interference errors on Turkish EFL learners’spoken English discourse. The author use 30 students (20 of whom are upperintermediate level and 10 of whom are intermediate level EFL learners) of S.E.S. private high school in Samsun (Turkey). They as the participants are selected by one non-probability sampling technique, convenience sampling technique and subjected to take Oxford Placement Test to determine their English proficiency level. The results indicated that prepositional, lexical, and grammatical errors were the most frequently encountered errors, in descending order. Also, independent samples t-test was applied to the data to determine whether English proficiency level had any effect on the number of errors made by two different English proficiency groups. It was found that there was no significant difference between two different English proficiency groups with regard to the number of errors they made.

This paper use a corpus-based approach to examine variations of the apology and thanking strategies used in English and Italian, not only that, the researchers are analyzing and contrasting apology and thanking strategies in American English and in Italian in terms of Marion Owen’s remedial strategies and Olshtain & Cohen’s semantic formulas in the apology speech act set. The purpose of the study is not only to compare apology and thanking speech acts but to also learn their contextual use. The findings suggest that the status and role of the situation affect the speakers’ choice of apology and thanking strategies, and semantic formulas are of great importance.

This article aims three things, the first is to study the degree of both cultural and sociolinguistic influences on Cuban Spanish in the oft-quoted Neocolonial period (1902-1959) through the revision of periodicals. Second, provide a descriptive analysis of the English-induced units collected, and their semantic or morpho-syntatic changes, based on their etymology, semantic field, and typology. And the last is to revise the occurrence of these Neocolonial anglicisms in contemporary Cuban Spanish, and their semantic or morpho-syntatic variations. Therefore, quantitative is the research method of this study. Meanwhile, for the subject of the research, the researcher use the revision of a renowned newspaper of Neocolonial period (1902-1959), Diario de la Marina, and the corresponding elaboration of a corpus of English-induced loanwords. And the conclusion of this study is a number of the anglicisms collected, particularly those related with social events, are unused in contemporary Cuban Spanish, which suggests a major semantic shifting in this sociolect after 1959.

This study observes the male and female buying decision making processes seen from BlackBerry Messenger texts. It focuses on the way of how male and female customers make a buying decision in the online shop via BlackBerry Messenger.  The data are analyzed by using the theory of the consumer decision-making process by Lamb, Hair, McDaniel (2003). The result of this study are, the male customers often order products in a simpler way rather than females. While, female customers seem to be more critical, attentive, and careful when they want to buy something in the buying processes in the online shop via BlackBerry Messenger rather than males.

Gong, Tao and friends. 2013. Construction of Cross-Cultural Identity by Language Choice and Linguistic Practice: A Case-Study of Mixed Hong Kong-Mainland Identity in University Contexts. Open Journal of Modern Linguistics. September. Vol 3/3. Pg: 208-215.


This study aims in examining the language choice and linguistic practice, especially code-mixing and code-switching and reveal a mixed Hong Kong-Mainland identity in these students. The construction of Mainland students’ identity through their language choice and linguistic interactions with local students, and discover two types of Hong Kong-Mainland identity constructed through linguistic practice of code-mixing and code-switching between Cantonese and Putonghua and non-linguistic practice of adequation and distinction. Therefore, those who hold a Mainland-oriented identity tend to have a Putonghua-dominated language choice and linguistic practice, whereas those who embrace a Hong Kong-oriented identity tend to prefer a Cantonese-dominated choice and practice. This mixed identity helps better conceive the social image of Mainland immigrants in Hong Kong and discuss the cross-cultural identity formed by linguistic practice. Nevertheless, the number of participants in this study is limited and most participants were from the University of Hong Kong, thus making the findings in this paper representative only for a specific group of students rather than the whole Mainland students in Hong Kong. The researchers suggest the future large-scale research and systematic analysis of Mainland students’ linguistic practices and identities from the socio-cultural linguistic perspective will help better understand this particular social community in Hong Kong.

This study focuses on the strategies of responding to apologies from a cross-cultural perspective. The researcher analyzes and compares apology response (AR) strategies adopted by three groups of English native speakers (ENS), Chinese native speakers (ENS) and Chinese EFL learners for potential cross-cultural differences. The 32 participants of ENS group were university students from a university in the western part of the United States, meanwhile, the participants in CNS group and Chinese EFL learners group were sophomores from a local university in the southern part of Jiangsu Province, China. The writer use qualitative method for this study. By the analysis which did by the researcher, the results indicate that all three groups most favour the strategy of Indirect Acceptance to show politeness when responding to apologies.

The author recalls his first discovery of Mishima’s existence shortly after his famous suicide in 1970, reading and responding to his literary output, and prodding famous authors such as Tennessee Williams and Cormac McCarthy for their thoughts on Mishima’s influence. The recent release by Criterion on DVD of Paul Schrader’s film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and Mishima’s own film Patriotism (1965) has caused the author of this essay to reconsider his relationship with the late Japanese writers’ books and literary legacy. The researcher found that Yukio Mishima is a poetic, persuasive writer, one steeped in ideas unambiguously vivified, thought and word made flesh.

The writer of this study use descriptive qualitative method. The author of the trilogy reveals the causes and effects of the betrayal in the books, and by the portrays of betrayal Roth shows a clear picture of American social life.

The researcher of this study tried to find the ideas and images of the experimental poetics, that the author has been articulating draw from the same experiential base as the Gnostic writers (Notley has studied Gnoticism), and that the two share a base of understanding with shamanic observation. The author uses Alice Notley’s The Descent of Alette and Sumerian Descent of Inanna. The researcher found that Notley’s post-modern epic placed alongside the extremely ancient Inanna myth-cycle reveals the shaman’s perennial theme of the Otherworldly Journey ever reconfigured according to the artist/healer’s relationship to a specific culture, and that culture’s relationship to the shamanic paradigm.

This study oppose that multiple truths can coexist, and beyond the romance and the pink flowery cover, Chick lit examines new areas in the modern women’s lives that feminists have not touched yet such as the impact of female in power on the advancement of female subordinate’s employees, and the reason that keeps contemporary women away from the glass ceiling. The writer used the illustration of Lauren Weisberger’s novels The Devil Wears Prada, Everyone Worth Knowing and Revenge Wears Prada as examples of Chick lit. Qualitative method used in this paper. The significance of this paper comes from its attempt to open up a dialogue between Chick lit and women’s movement in order to cover some of the gaps in feminist analyses of Chick lit.

And lastly, the author of this study found that the symbolic novel mainly describing the nature not only has countless achievements in the past, but also is energetic today.

M, Moslehi.2016. A Study of Gender Performativity in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando: A Mocking Biography.Vol.18.No.7 (1-7)

The paper aims at concentrating on Judith Butler‘s theory of gender as performance and how Virginia Woolf challenges the assumptions of heterosexuality in Virginia Woolf‘s Orlando (1992). Woolf rebels against the traditional view of gender as two separate categories by presenting Orlando as an androgynous and bisexual character. This paper use qualitative method. The paper shows that Woolf criticizes the heterosexual society by presenting Orlando as a bisexual and androgynous character. Moreover, Woolf shows the cross-dressing is a signifier of the social construction of gender and through flouting this convention by using cross dressing she mocks at the rule of clothing as a presentation of gender ideality. She proclaims that clothe is only the appearance and every person has the capacity of both sexes.
